David Coleman, world renowned sports commentator and presenter, has part of his private collection going under the hammer this week at RWB Auctions.
David Coleman worked for the BBC for 46 years, with a recognisable voice associated with football and the Olympics. Having provided commentary for six FIFA World Cups between 1962 and 1982, he also covered no less than 11 Summer Olympics and 8 Commonwealth Games amongst other notable sporting events.
David was widely known for hosting ‘A Question of Sport’ for 18 years, making him one of the world’s most recognisable voices for British sporting excellence.
In 1993, his contributions to sports journalism earned him an OBE in the New Years Honours by Queen Elizabeth II. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 87.
As sports editor for the BBC Midlands, he was a prolific writer, working on typewriters, and this sale offers a number of his personal notes, research, and items of sporting and personal historical significance. His family have entered these, providing a unique opportunity to own a piece of his own works from notable events in his journalistic career.
Valuer Gordon Brockman of RWB Auctions says, “We are delighted to be offering such personal items for sale belonging to such a stalwart character from the world of British sport. Items like this are rare, and this presents a truly unique opportunity to own a piece of sporting history.”
