Swindon Film will be kicking off its 80th anniversary later this year with generous sponsorship by Old Town specialist jewellers Deacons.
Swindon Film shows predominantly new, award-winning international films at the Arts Centre in Devizes Road. It is run by a team of nine volunteers, and is a not-for-profit organisation.
Swindon Film will be 80 years old in 2027, and plans to celebrate this by making even more people aware of this entertainment in Old Town.
The film society shows 14 films a season, on a Wednesday evening between September and March.
Swindon Film’s Chair, Robert Elrick, said the committee spends a lot of time on choosing the films before the season begins.
“The film committee aims to show a careful balance of films that reflects the drama, tragedy and comedy of life, reflecting what the people of the world have in common, rather than what separates them from one another,” said Robert.
“We are a not-for-profit organisation, so to have some financial support from another supporter of Old Town activity is really helpful. It should make sure our 80th birthday year goes off with a bang!”
Richard Deacon, Managing Director of Deacons, said his company is delighted to support Swindon Film and help it celebrate the milestone.
“Deacons was founded in 1848 – a full 99 years before Swindon Film – so they still have some catching up to do! But we’re delighted to help them celebrate this milestone. They are one of the oldest film societies in the country, yet they keep ahead of trends and show award-winning international films in a delightful venue. Long may Swindon Film continue!”
