Online auction aims to raise £10,000 for Swindon’s domestic abuse charity

An ambitious online auction is hoped to raise over £10,000 for a local domestic abuse charity.

Coinciding with this year’s International Women’s Day, Society Without Abuse (SWA) will be giving people the opportunity to get their hands on a number of exclusive items and experiences as part of their 50th anniversary auction. Going live at 8am on International Women’s Day, 8 March, the 50 for 50 Auction will run until 8pm on Sunday 30 March.

With 50 prizes for their 50th year, including goodies donated by local businesses as well as money-can’t-buy items, all money raised through the auction will go directly to one day bringing an end to domestic abuse through education, early intervention and prevention.

The star items of the auction include a diamond encrusted, mother of pearl watch donated by Deacon’s, as well as tickets to music events, private flights across the county and exclusive activities including access to members’ day at Goodwood and joining Time Team’s Dr Phil Harding in exploring the landscape around Stonehenge.

Treats also feature throughout the auction with prizes on offer including meals out in and around Swindon, beauty treatments and books.

Interim CEO of SWA Kate Rowland explained: “Thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals across Swindon and Wiltshire we have collected an amazing number of prizes and experiences to include in our auction.

“As we see our 50th year come to a close, we’re proud to have over 50 items in the auction and we hope that it will raise over £10,000. All the money raised will be used to directly fund our children’s and young people’s programmes to help educate the next generation on healthy relationships and also fund recovery programmes for children who have been exposed to domestic abuse in the home.

“Witnessing domestic abuse in the home as a child can have damaging, long lasting effects both on their achievement and their expectations of their own relationships as adults. If we can help repair the damage done, as well as educating young people to expect more, we can move towards one day seeing a society without abuse.”
