A CHARITY cricket match hosted by Malmesbury Mayor Robert Hastings delivered a close result, strong community support and some unexpected celestial entertainment!
The Mayor’s Invitation XI took on The Whole Hog cricket team at Malmesbury Cricket Club in a friendly 20-over match, played under informal pub rules which saw everyone bowl two overs and batters automatically retiring after reaching 25 runs. A decent crowd turned out to support both teams and enjoy the evening, which ended with the Mayor’s Invitation XI securing victory by just three runs. The event was the first of its kind and it’s hoped it will become an annual occasion.
The winning team was presented with the Malmesbury Mayor’s Challenge Cup by the Mayoress Barbara Firth following the match.
“It was a really fun evening and it was fantastic to see such a good crowd coming along to support both teams. The match could hardly have been closer, so I was very pleased my team managed to win by three runs. We hope this will now become an annual part of our fundraising activity,” said Robert Hastings, Mayor of Malmesbury.
The evening was made even more memorable by the solar eclipse, which added an unusual backdrop to the sporting action and gave spectators another reason to remember the occasion.
The match also raised £1,400 for local good causes. A sum of £500 will go to Malmesbury Cricket Club and the Mayor’s chosen charities – HEALS (supporting those in need in the town), Malmesbury Food Bank, and Malmesbury Abbey Music Society – will receive a share of £900.
“The solar eclipse added a lot of fun to the evening and made an already special occasion even more memorable. The most important part of the event was bringing people together and raising money for these worthwhile causes and I’d like to thank everyone who gave their time for this event,” said Robert.
