New lift planned for Malmesbury Town Hall

Latest news from Malmesbury Town Council

Malmesbury Town Council is investing £40,000 installing a new lift in the Town Hall, as the old one is becoming obsolete.

The installation will start from Monday February 24, taking approximately four weeks, and lift services will be out of action during the renovation.

Cllr Steve D’Arcy said a new lift was needed as the old one, installed 15 years ago, was at risk of permanently breaking down.

“The current lift has no internal phone system to use in case of emergency and we have been experiencing issues with the practicality of the doors,” he said.

“By contrast, the new lift will have automatic doors, an intercom, and voice and bell announcements on arrival at floors. This will be much better for Town Hall visitors and users, particularly those with disabilities, who rely on the lift.”

The Wednesday senior citizens luncheon club have been informed of the lift closure, but it is hoped that they will be able to use instead the ground floor Old School Room, which itself has been closed for some weeks for renovation.

The combined investment for the lift and Old School Room refurbishment – which has involved the removal and replacement of the existing floor – comes to £80,000.

Cllr D’Arcy said: “This is a significant outlay for the council, but essential to ensure the ongoing safety of the many groups who use the Town Hall facilities. It also means the Old School Room and lift will be fit for purpose for many years to come.”
