Wrag Barn Golf Club at Highworth, just outside Swindon has been extolling the virtues of National Apprenticeship Week 2026 – a week-long celebration between February 9-15 that shines a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to businesses and the wider community.
Verity Manners, owner and director of the beautiful 18-hole golf club, said: “There are some naysayers who believe apprenticeships are just cheap labour. However, we know from experience that they can provide real opportunities. Our apprentice, Kiel, has brought with him a sunny, enthusiastic personality, a willingness to work hard and has a habit of always arriving on time – his bicycle is always at Wrag Barn long before I arrive in the morning!”
Kiel McGailey-Mcghee (19) attended Highworth Warneford School before starting as an apprentice chef in 2022 and embarked on a training programme with regular day-release to attend Swindon College.
Thanks to guidance from Wrag Barn’s Head Chef, Simon and other members of the Golf Club’s Food & Beverage team, Kiel has acquired the skills to cook delicious food for parties and celebrations. He is unfazed by the challenge of providing food under a time pressure for golfers heading to the first tee but wanting immediate sustenance.
“We’re very proud of everything that Kiel has achieved and we’ll miss him when he starts work in a business listed 20th in the EstrellaDamm Top 50 Gastropubs.
“Whilst learning to cook, Kiel has also learned to play golf! I hope Kiel’s story will inspire others to follow the apprenticeship pathway.”
