Wiltshire Scrapstore are honoured to receive The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
Wiltshire Scrapstore, an environmental and community charity, based in Lacock, have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2025. This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.
Our charity has 80 wonderfully talented volunteers who contribute over 600 hours a week throughout the Scrapstore. This is the equivalent of 17 full time staff! The charity could not operate without their invaluable help and support. In 2010 we lost half of our funding, the result of which meant staff hours were seriously reduced. We still only have a small group of paid staff, who are greatly supported by our fantastic volunteers!
Wiltshire Scrapstore collects clean, unused items destined for landfill, from business and also households. These resources are made available to the community to get creative, for a donation. The materials are also used in the charity’s Social Enterprise, workshops and parties. Our talented volunteers also upcycle, repurpose and make unique handmade items to sell and raise extra funds, both at the Scrapstore, in Barty’s Eco Shop in Lacock and online.
Wiltshire Scrapstore is one of two Wiltshire charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award in November 2025. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty the King. 2025 marks the third year of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
Representatives of Wiltshire Scrapstore will receive the award crystal and certificate from Dame Sarah Troughton DCVO, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire on Monday 23rd February at 12.30pm.
In addition, two volunteers from Wiltshire Scrapstore will attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May 2026, along with other recipients of this year’s award.
Glynis Cosgrave, Assistant Director and Volunteer manager said: “We are absolutely delighted that our group’s hard work and dedication has been recognised. Our charity could not exist if it were not for the tremendous support, commitment and dedication of our talented volunteers. We have over 80 volunteers that help throughout the charity, between them, they give 600 hours a week to keep our charity thriving. Approximately 300 hours are in house, and another 300 hours are working from home.
Their help throughout the charity, includes collecting materials saved from landfill, restocking the warehouse, manning our Eco shop, running workshops, making and designing craft packs, producing unique items to sell in our shops and working with young people on Duke of Edinburgh Awards, school work experience. They are truly amazing!”
