Swindon Film gets started again in September with a season of 14 films showcasing some of the best of international cinema.
On Wednesday 9 September the excellent Dragonfly reveals how neglected pensioner Elsie finds an unexpected ally in her younger neighbour Colleen. Over time, a friendship grows but Elsie’s resentful, guilt-ridden son stirs up tensions, bringing shocking consequences. Starring Brenda Blethyn, Andrea Riseborough and Jason Watkins, this film was described by critic Peter Bradshaw as “a haunted, social-realist drama with elements of Mike Leigh but also moments of thriller and even horror”.
Then Wednesday 23 September brings From Hilde, With Love, a story about a German woman who joins rebel anti-Nazi group Red Orchestra, falls in love and marries, gets pregnant and is then captured by the Gestapo. This stunning tale, based on real life, is deeply moving, and acclaimed German actress Liv Lisa Fries shines in the role of Hilde.
While on Wednesday 7 October Swindon Film is showing the Georgian film Blackbird, Blackbird, Blackberry. Forty-eight year old Etero is single and the subject of gossip. When she unexpectedly falls for a man, she is caught between a relationship or independence. She navigates her emotions while grappling with societal norms, searching for happiness.
Swindon Film is a not-for-profit organisation that shows some of the best films international cinema has to offer, at the Arts Centre in the heart of Swindon’s Old Town, on a large screen. There is tiered seating and refreshments, and doors open at 7.15pm for a start time of 7.45pm.
Tickets are at a highly competitive price. For the lowest prices, which involve signing up to be a full member, pay a one-off joining fee of £85 and then see 14 films for just under £6 a film.
Pay as you go member pay £5 for their membership fee, and then £9 per film (£8 for concessions). Guests pay £10 per film.
