A rare modern £2 error coin struck at The Royal Mint Experience in Wales has sold for £1,500 highlighting a growing demand for contemporary minting mistakes.
On January 20 last year visitors to The Royal Mail Experience were given the opportunity to strike their own coin as part of the tour – this is offered to all who take the tour. However on this day, for a limited period of a few hours, the George Orwell themed £2 coins were inadvertently struck with a non-matching edge inscription. This created a small number of error coins before the mistake was identified.
A seller who collected one of these coins brought it to the Wiltshire-based The Britannia Coin Company where it was sold this week (February 10) to another collector in the USA for £1,500.
The standard George Orwell £2 coin should carry the edge inscription “THERE WAS TRUTH AND THERE WAS UNTRUTH”. However, the error coins were struck with the inscription “IN SERVITIO OMNIUM”, wording used on other £2 issues. The mismatch has made the coins particularly desirable among collectors of modern decimal currency.
Christopher Collects, who works with The Britannia Coin Company and runs the UK’s most followed coin-themed YouTube channel, said: “As a collector, I love striking my own coin at The Royal Mint Experience, and it was exciting to find out about the Orwell edge error £2 coin last year. We know only a handful of these coins were made before the error was caught, so examples with the wrong edge are very collectable. If you visited The Royal Mint in January 2025, it’s definitely worth checking to see if you have one of these rare and valuable coins.”
Modern error coins are widely recognised as highly collectable, especially among dedicated £2 and 50p collectors. Their rarity, combined with clear and identifiable differences from standard issues, often results in significant premiums.
The Britannia Coin Company, based in Royal Wootton Bassett, specialises in buying and selling coins and more information can be found here https://britanniacoincompany.com/
