New woodland for Wilts & Berks Canal

Wiltshire businesses are invited to support the creation of a new woodland and wildlife habitat as part of the restoration of a former waterway.
The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is looking for corporate partners interested in joining their workparties for free teambuilding events.
The Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch of the charity has a wide range of opportunities available, from tree planting to hedgelaying.
Much of the activity is currently focused on newly-acquired land below Naish Hill near Lacock.

Branch wildlife officer Howard Yardy said: “We’ve already restored a significant stretch from Pewsham Locks to Double Bridge, and last year we signed a long-term lease with landowner Wiltshire Council in the hope we can continue further south towards the edge of Reybridge.
“Aside from the work on the canal itself, the additional seven acres of council land provides an outstanding opportunity to develop new wildlife habitats and boost the biodiversity.
“Volunteers have already started work on the meadow but it’s a big site and we would welcome some extra help before the end of the tree planting season this month.”

Help with hedgelaying and coppicing is also needed, with safety briefings beforehand and all work supervised by experienced volunteers.
Workparties take place throughout the week and at weekends. All tools and protective equipment are provided.

Howard added: “We’re inviting local businesses to take their staff out of the office for the day and enjoy plenty of fresh air and exercise, while learning new skills and bringing their teams closer together.
“They’ll also be creating much-needed woodland which will help to tackle the climate crisis and leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy.”

The aim of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to restore the entire waterway from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon.
