Good Energy acquires Wessex ECOEnergy as solar surges

Good Energy, in Chippenham, has acquired solar and storage installation business Wessex ECOEnergy as part of its ambition to be the UK’s go-to company for all things solar.

The announcement comes as the UK recorded its biggest quarter for solar installations since 2015. The latest MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) data showed more than 50,000 solar PV installs in the first three months of 2023, a 114% increase on the same period in 2022.

Established in 2014, Wessex ECOEnergy is a Dorchester-based provider of solar and storage installs to homes and businesses in the South West and will continue to operate under its established brand as part of the Good Energy Group. It is MCS, RECC and Tesla Energy Certified and completed 155 installs in 2022. Following Good Energy’s acquisition Wessex will be targeting 600 panels installed per month within 18 months.

This acquisition follows Good Energy’s move into heat pump installations in late 2022 before completing its first solar installation in early 2023. The company already services over 180,000 solar customers as the UK’s second largest administrator of the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme.

Good Energy chief executive Nigel Pocklington said: “Good Energy is fast becoming the UK’s go-to all-in-one solar service company. We have the second largest solar generating customer base, paid out a record amount for solar power last year and have launched market leading smart export tariffs. Bringing Wessex into the business accelerates our solar and storage installations business as the solar surge continues.
“There is a £5-10 billion growth opportunity in clean energy technology installations among climate-conscious consumers. With our trusted legacy and green-motivated existing customer base we are positioned to be a major player in this, and are already kitting out homes with heat pumps, solar and batteries. Now we’re supercharging our solar services.”

Daniel Cole, director and co-founder of Wessex ECOEnergy, said: “Solar power and storage are going to be crucial technologies for cutting the UK’s carbon and addressing climate change, so it is superb to see it surge in popularity.
“Having grown our business through trust and word-of-mouth, completing some of the UK’s biggest and most diverse residential and commercial installs, now is the perfect time to take it to the next stage.
“Joining forces with a company with the green credentials and long history of innovation that Good Energy has means we can build on everything we have achieved to date.
“We can’t wait to get going with the Good Energy team to help customers cut their carbon and their energy bills.”

Good Energy has acquired Wessex ECOEnergy for an initial consideration of £2.5 million, rising to a potential £4 million.
