Every year, the Captains of the Seniors’, Men’s and Ladies’ sections of Wrag Barn Golf Club near Highworth choose a charity to support. “It’s not just about the money raised, but the willingness of so many to contribute their time and effort towards fundraising,” explained Verity Manners, co-owner of Wrag Barn.
In March this year, members from the Seniors’ section attended a presentation and watched Seniors’ Captain, David Brownsell hand over a cheque for £8,220 to Peter, a representative for Marie Curie. Peter said the money would help provide end-of-life care for anyone with a terminal illness. He made an important point: “While many people plan for birth, very few plan for the end of their lives. The Seniors’ section has now raised £25,022.19 since 2021.
The Men’s section under the captaincy of Shaun Judd raised £3,443 for CALM (Cancer and Leukaemia Movement). This is a local charity which works within the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust area to improve the quality of life for children in treatment and to give support to the families.
Thanks to Zurich’s match funding, arranged by a member of Shaun’s family, the total was doubled to £6,886. This will go directly to the support network which CALM provides as the charity endeavours to keep costs to a minimum with no paid employees.
The Ladies’ section, though smaller in number, raised £3,594 over two years for Kidney Research UK. Former ladies Captain Suzanne Hunt said: “We mustn’t forget the men who came up to me and put a tenner in my hand for the charity!”
This ongoing effort shows how much the Wrag Barn community is willing to give. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, organised, or helped in any way.
