Why autumn is a good time to check your roof before winter

As autumn arrives across Swindon and Wiltshire, it is a useful time for homeowners to take a look at the condition of their roof before winter brings heavier rain, stronger winds and colder weather.

Small roofing problems can sometimes go unnoticed during the warmer months. A slipped tile, deteriorating flashing or a blocked gutter may not cause an obvious problem straight away, but prolonged wet weather can expose weaknesses and allow water into the property.

One of the simplest things homeowners can do is visually inspect their roof from ground level. Look for slipped, cracked or missing tiles, damaged ridge tiles and anything that appears different from the surrounding roof covering. There is no need to climb onto the roof yourself; anything difficult to see or safely access should be checked by a roofing contractor.

Leadwork and flashing around chimneys, roof junctions and other vulnerable areas are also worth keeping an eye on. Over time, movement and weather exposure can cause these areas to deteriorate, creating potential routes for water to enter.
Flat roofs should also be checked before winter. Signs such as visible damage, lifting material, standing water or evidence of leaks internally can indicate that maintenance or repairs may be needed.

Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits form another important part of the roofing system. Autumn leaves and debris can quickly block gutters, preventing rainwater from draining properly. This can result in overflowing water and unnecessary strain on the roofline.

Inside the property, homeowners can also look for warning signs such as damp patches, staining around ceilings, moisture in the loft or daylight visible through the roof covering.

Finding a small problem early can often make it easier to repair before it develops into something more serious.
