When stock starts taking over: Making space for a growing Wiltshire business

Growth has a habit of filling whatever space you give it.

A few boxes of stock become a wall of boxes. Packaging ends up under desks. Tools migrate from the van into the garage, then into whichever corner is still free. For home-based businesses, there is usually a point where the spare room stops being a spare room altogether.

The problem comes when all that extra stock and equipment starts getting in the way of actually running the business.

Across Wiltshire, plenty of small businesses reach this stage before they are ready to take on a larger office, workshop or warehouse. A commercial move brings higher costs and a much bigger commitment. If stock, equipment or materials are causing most of the pressure, freeing up working space can give the business more room to grow without changing premises.

Work out what is actually getting in the way

Before looking at larger premises, it is worth taking stock of what is using the space you already have.

For an online retailer, it could be products, packaging and returns. A trades business may have tools, materials and equipment sitting around between jobs. Offices tend to collect old files, spare furniture, exhibition materials and boxes that somebody has been meaning to sort through for the past two years.

Much of it may only be needed occasionally, despite taking up working space every day.

Moving those items elsewhere can make the space easier to use. A stockroom becomes simpler to manage. Another desk can fit into the office. The garage becomes usable again.

For businesses using storage for stock, equipment and supplies, the biggest benefit is often simply getting items out of the main working space without losing access to them altogether.

That is particularly useful for smaller businesses that are still growing and do not yet need the cost or commitment of larger premises.

Stock rarely grows at a convenient rate

Stock is one of the quickest ways for a small business to outgrow its surroundings.

You can go from keeping a manageable amount on a couple of shelves to dealing with deliveries, packaging and several product lines surprisingly quickly. Seasonal businesses feel this even more. Christmas stock may arrive months before December, while event equipment or materials for seasonal trades can spend part of the year taking up space without being used.

For businesses carrying more inventory than they have room for, storage for business stock gives them somewhere to keep that overflow without filling their day-to-day working space.

Keeping stock in one place can also make it easier to manage than having part of it in the office, some at home and another batch squeezed into a garage.

This becomes particularly useful when stock levels change throughout the year. A retailer may need considerably more room before Christmas than it does in February, while an events business may have equipment that spends weeks at a time between bookings.

Paying for commercial premises large enough to handle the busiest point of the year can leave a lot of expensive floor space unused during quieter periods.

Home-based businesses tend to feel it first

Working from home keeps overheads low, but stock and equipment can quickly eat into the space available.

An ecommerce business may be perfectly manageable from home until orders increase and every delivery creates another pile of cartons. Someone running an events business can quickly end up living alongside banners, tables, display equipment and boxes of supplies.

Moving those items out of the house can create a clearer divide between home and work while allowing the business to continue operating from the same base.

That can give a growing business more time before the cost of dedicated premises makes sense.

Think about how often you need the things you store

There is little benefit in putting something into storage if somebody needs to collect it three times a day.

Frequency matters, particularly for trades, retailers and businesses holding stock for customer orders. A storage facility close to the places you already travel through can save a considerable amount of time.

It is also worth being realistic about unit size. Businesses often accumulate more than they realise, so taking a quick inventory before choosing a unit can save having to rethink the setup a few weeks later.

Organisation matters once everything is inside, too. Clearly labelled boxes, accessible walkways and keeping frequently used stock near the front sounds basic, but it saves a lot of rummaging when someone needs something quickly.

Storage is useful when the business is changing

There are also periods when a business needs extra space for a relatively short time.

An office refurbishment may mean clearing furniture and equipment for a few weeks. A move can leave a gap between leaving one property and getting properly settled into the next. A business introducing new product lines may need somewhere to keep additional stock while it gets a clearer idea of demand.

Temporary storage gives businesses somewhere to put those items while the rest of the operation carries on.

It can also take some of the pressure out of moving premises. Lease dates, deliveries, refurbishment work and new furniture do not always arrive in the order you would choose.

Give the business some breathing room

If an office no longer has enough room for the team, or a workshop cannot support the work being carried out there, a move may already be due.

Where stock and equipment are taking up most of the available room, clearing those items out can extend the life of the existing premises considerably.

For a small business, another few months or another year in the same space can matter. It keeps overheads predictable while the business grows and gives the owner more time to decide what the next premises actually need to provide.

It also beats spending another year stepping around boxes.
