Community-minded resident Steve D’Arcy has taken on the important role of Chair of the Trustees of The Athelstan Museum in Malmesbury.
Steve, who is well known asa local town councillor has taken on the role to support the volunteer-run museum which is one of the most respected in Wiltshire and the South West.
“I am happy to lend my support to this ‘jewel’ in Malmesbury’s historic crown, and I look forward to working with the other trustees and the management team to continue the progress of recent years,” Steve said.
“This is an outstanding museum with high quality exhibits that offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. It is a source of pride to Malmesbury that it has been developed and maintained over decades by volunteers. It is a privilege to be involved in the next phase of development for the museum and to continue this work.”
Although Malmesbury is only a small market town, it has been an historical centre of national significance from the Bronze Age and its residents embrace its astonishing heritage. More than 70 volunteers keep the museum open and its free of charge to all who visit.
The museum itself is home to an original water colour painting of Malmesbury Abbey by J W Turner and a hoard of Roman coins which were found nearby – as well as many other objects which speak to the history of the town and its residents through the ages.
Steve said: “My aim is to support and maintain the high standards that have already been set by the current organisation. I also recognise the importance of maintaining a sustainable experience for volunteers that meets both their needs and that of the museum. The enticing prospect, however, is to seek out and take advantage of new opportunities that will improve and expand the museum offering, ensuring the future of this valuable institution.”
Steve has taken over from volunteer and former Chair Sharon Nolan who held the post for several years. Sharon will still retain an involvement in the museum and will support Steve while he gets up to speed with all aspects of the organisation.
Sharon said: “It has been a privilege to Chair the Trustees of Athelstan Museum Malmesbury during exceptionally exciting times. I have enjoyed working with loyal and enthusiastic volunteers, making new friendships, and learning something new every day.
“It is a real pleasure to be handing over to Steve D’Arcy who knows Malmesbury well and who has the vision, energy and skills to take the museum forward into a new phase and a sustainable future. I wish him and Athelstan Museum every success.”
The Athelstan Museum is entirely volunteer run and is open six days a week for the public. For more information visit https://www.athelstanmuseum.org.uk/
