The outgoing Mayor of Malmesbury Cllr Stephen James has confirmed that around £16,000 has been raised for charity during his year in office, following a dedicated period of community fundraising and events. The exact figure has yet to be finalised.
The total was significantly aided by the Mayor’s Charity Ball, which successfully raised just over £8,000.
A portion, amounting to £2,250, was raised through a special one-off appeal for Malmesbury Stands With Ukraine. Known as Operation Ambulance, this initiative focused on providing medical transport for those in need.
The remaining proceeds from the year are being donated to the Mayor’s chosen local charities – Malmesbury and District Foodbank and HEALS of Malmesbury – to assist their ongoing work with individuals and families facing hardship.
Reflecting on the successful year, Cllr James commented: “I’m humbled by the generosity of all the donors who have supported my charitable fundraising throughout the year. This is a fantastic result and I am very grateful to my fundraising committee members for their efforts; it has been very much a team effort. This money will make a big difference to those facing hardship in this area. I hope it will also encourage the volunteers working for these vital charities.”
Cllr James’s year in office comes is coming to an end, with a new Mayor to be announced in mid-May.
