Charity challenges people to walk in the footsteps of domestic abuse survivors

Swindon charity Society Without Abuse (SWA) is urging people to walk in the footsteps of survivors of domestic abuse by challenging them to take part in a special fundraising Firewalk.

With victims of domestic abuse on average experiencing 35 incidents of abuse before seeking help, life can at times feel like you’re walking on hot coals. With this in mind, SWA’s Firewalk is challenging people to help bring an end to domestic abuse by walking just 15 metres at temperatures reaching 1500 degrees.

The event, sponsored by Gel Studios, will take place at Swindon Cricket Ground from 6pm on Friday 10th October and with food and drink available. Challengers and their supporters are in for an exhilarating evening of facing their fears whilst raising money for a vital cause.

Natasha Moyles, Operations Manager for SWA, said: “We’re urging people to not only ‘walk in the shoes’ of a domestic abuse survivors but to conquer their fears and walk 15 metres over hot coals to show their support.

“Braving a Firewalk will give participants and supporters a glimpse of what survivors of abuse have experienced – from conquering their fear of taking the first step on their route to freedom and the anxiety of facing the unknown, through to the relief and empowerment of doing something that you may have thought was unachievable. At the end, you’re then able to look back at how you did the impossible and embraced the embers, whilst being supported by your friends and loved ones every step of the way.

“It’s so important that as a society we can come together to work towards an end to domestic abuse. We can’t ignore that it is continuing to rise, with an average of 1 in 4 individuals experiencing some form of abuse within their lifetime. It costs the UK around about £85 billion pounds a year, with 2.3 million women ages 16 and over experiencing some form of abuse last year. The support we provide for those escaping domestic abuse and recovering from the trauma, both for adults and children, can turn lives around and our education programmes help stop abuse happening again in the future.”

Taking part in the SWA Firewalk costs £30 with a commitment to raise £100 in sponsorship for the charity. To sign up for SWA’s Firewalk visit www.givengain.com/campaign/firewalk
