A transformation for Fairford Cricket Club

There are exciting times ahead for Fairford Cricket Club as it makes plans to extend and renovate its existing clubhouse.

The current pavilion is believed to have been built shortly after the 1889 founding and has had various extensions over the past 136 years. However, the Club can actually trace its history back to 1843, but the founding year was 1889 when land was provided for a ground and the first match was held there against Kempsford.

Fairford Cricket Club’s pavilion and grounds have grown to become a significant community venue, hosting other local sports teams and events such as Fairford Festival and Fairford Fireworks. It has also become an important business hub providing working space for small business owners and remote workers and liaising with Business Connect to bring local businesses together with community groups.

The Club is proud of its active youth section with teams for most young ages and, for the senior players, there is a high standard of County League competitions and excellent coaching available. Friday night is Club Night for all – even if you don’t play cricket! Social membership is just £25 per year to enjoy year-round social events, one of the best local beer gardens and a subsidised bar – right in the heart of Fairford.

Now the Cricket Club Committee have designed a contemporary extension with alterations to the existing clubhouse within their limited budget to provide an updated venue with more accessibility, improved seating, bar, kitchen, storage, new changing facilities and upgraded toilets for all to use and enjoy together with an outdoor seating area and extensive, picturesque views over the cricket pitch and Cotswold countryside.

A planning application will be submitted in December with a decision expected in February.

Clive Elliott, Chair of Fairford Cricket Club committee said: “We hope the community will want to help us with realising our plans for a smart, new Cricket Club. In return for sponsorship, donations or other assistance, we can offer a variety of incentive packages including branding around the ground or on the outdoor screen, recognition on the pavilion plaque or discounted use of the pavilion for functions.

“With community help, company sponsorship or grants, Fairford Cricket Club can provide a modern clubhouse for its growing membership and social and event facilities for the whole Fairford community.”
