Budding archaeologists, astronomers, gardeners and classic car enthusiasts have the chance to get their hands on money-can’t-buy experiences thanks to Society Without Abuse’s (SWA) 50 for 50 online fundraising auction. With the auction closing at 8pm on Sunday 30th March, supporters are being urged to get their bids in soon.
As part of the Swindon charity’s 50th anniversary, local businesses and friends of the charity have donated 50 exclusive prizes, including a special visit to Stonehenge hosted by Time Team’s TV archaeologist Dr Phil Harding.
Another lucky winner will be able to take a private tour of the secret garden of Bowood House by The Marchioness of Lansdowne and Bowood’s Head Gardener David Glass. Bowood House, in Chippenham, is one of the best surviving examples of the landscape movement, designed by Capability Brown in the 1760s.
Also, a winning bidder will be able to get behind the scenes at Great Chalfield Manor and Gardens near Melksham, which has featured in Poldark, Wolf Hall, Other Boleyn Girl and BBC’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The current residents will take the winner on a special tour of the Grade 1 listed manor house and impressive Arts and Crafts gardens.
It will be a night out like no other for the winning bidder of a guided visit to the Marlborough College Blackett Observatory. Under the guidance of an expert director of the Observatory, eight people will be able to learn more about the Wiltshire skies in this exclusive visit.
Motoring enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to attend the kick-off event of the 2025 Goodwood Racing season with two tickets to the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting; an event usually restricted for members only.
The SWA 50 for 50 Auction will run until 8pm on Sunday 30 March and all money raised through the auction will go directly to one day bringing an end to domestic abuse through education, early intervention and prevention
SWA’s Chief Executive, Kate Rowland said: “We have had some amazing experiences donated to us for the auction, including some once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. As well as exclusive, behind the scenes visits, we also have beauty treatments, art, jewellery and food and so there’s definitely something for everyone.
“All the money raised will be used to directly fund our children’s and young people’s programmes to help educate the next generation on healthy relationships and also fund recovery programmes for children who have been exposed to domestic abuse in the home.”
